Calls For Submission

351 (St. John's, NL): Call to Visual Artists, Deadline November 16

Blank Canvas: 351 Indoor Art Commission

Commissioned art installation for 351 Water Street, the first new office building in downtown St. John's in more than 25 years.

East Port Properties is commissioning a piece of artwork for an indoor public art installation to be permanently displayed at 351 Water Street. This artwork will help establish a lasting legacy, celebrating the arts, culture, and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The commission, valued at $100,000, is open to all artists who demonstrate a significant affiliation to the province. It is not limited to those currently residing in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The proposal and details regarding an upcoming Information Session on Saturday, October 20th, 2012 are available at http://www.threefiftyone.ca.

Proposals are due on or before Friday, November 16th, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. NST.

About 351:
Slated to open in 2014, 351 will be the first new office building in downtown St. John's in more than 25 years. It is currently being developed by East Port Properties and designed by Stantec Architecture (formally PHB Group). Inspired by its surroundings, 351 will use natural tide technology, and respect our natural environment. It will be the first sea-water heated and cooled building in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The End of the World by Kevin Schmidt

The End of the World is a website that hosts photographs of homemade sign that warn of impending doom. This online photographic archive will grow, indefinitely, over time.

Kevin Schmidt (b. 1972) is a Vancouver based artist who works across diverse media, but primarily in photography and video. Since graduating from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 1997, Schmidt has received considerable national and international recognition. Recent solo exhibitions include Epic Journey at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal (2011); A Sign in the Northwest Passage at The Power Plant, Toronto (2011); Wild Signals at Galerie Barbara Thumm, Berlin (2009). He has participated in a number of significant group exhibitions including Untrue North, Yukon Arts Centre, Whitehorse (2012); unfinished business, Waterside Project Space, London UK (2010); and Sentimental Journey, Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2009). Schmidt is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver.
