Theses three artists recently returned to Winnipeg after each spending time in Toronto, Ontario and Florence, Italy. Influenced by the malleable nature of myth, each has created work exploring the connection between myth and culture-- whether it be monumentalizing things which are usually hushed, elevating the mundane to the mythic, or irreverently altering existing narratives. Through drawing, painting, collage, photography, and animation the artists explore a world and a Winnipeg in constant translation from the literal to the mythical.

EVIN COLLIS, born and raised in Winnipeg, graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting. He has recently returned to Winnipeg upon completing an internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy. His works are interdisciplinary and currently focuses on the re-interpretation of Canadian history, myth and folklore.

ERIN JOSEPHSON-LAIDLAW, born in 1987 in Winnipeg, graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting. She completed her thesis in Florence, Italy, received her BFA in Toronto. She currently lives and works in Winnipeg.

TIMOTHY RAFFEY is a photographer. He lives and works, usually in Winnipeg.

Call for Proposals
Encounters with Art TM series is a unique cultural initiative of Cadillac Fairview at Fairview Mall in Toronto. The program presents contemporary art and education to the general populace within the framework of a shopping centre. Local Festivals

I just learned that the Mahone Bay Boat Festival will not be held this year. This event is 20 years old but lack of volunteers and an operating loss from last year have left the organizers with no choice... the festival is cancelled.

What will this mean to the local artists? Fewer visitors, fewer buyers, fewer sales.

If events such as this are to continue there must be a way for all interested parties to support the function and to make sure that continued success is possible. However, things have to change as well. People do not want to see the same old thing year after year. They want new experiences and many festivals don't deliver on that front.

To all festival organizers, try to introduce one new item a year. It may be as simple as replacing the opening speeches with a ribbon cutting instead...not in addition to. Look for ways to increase participation and involvement and reward the volunteers. Make sure they get into the concerts, or have first choice at the sale tables or get a plaque or certificate of appreciation.

Will all festivals survive? No. Should all festivals survive? No. But a community needs to save the good and make them better. That is the only way for everyone to be winners.

Marketing

Marketing...what a challenge for many artists. The ability to create beautiful work is not often matched with the skill to find customers and to promote the sales of the artwork.

This it a topic that is very obvious to me right now as I have spent several hours during the last few days working on a set of CDs on the topic of Marketing developed with the artist and craft producer in mind.

There are a few things that all successful marketing campaigns have in common, regardless of the service or product or art work being offered for sale. The first is the simple fact that there is a development and documented plan. An attempt to logically develop how and where the items or services will be offered, the methods that will be used to tell potential customers about the opportunities available and details of the benefits of making a purchase.

The second common item is the development of a budget to plan when and where advertising and promotional expenditures will happen.

The third common thread is the review and revision of the marketing plan to reflect new facts or circumstances as they become available.

This aspect of a business may be difficult for some but it does become easier with practice. It is important and essential if the artist or craft producer wants to increase sales through new customers or venues.

Summer Sales

Summertime is often a good time for craft sales. People are travelling and want momentos of a pleasant visit. This year more and more people are taking advantage of stay-vacations. They are staying at home or close to home and exploring and discovering their local surroundings. This is a great chance for artists and craft producers to get local people more familiar with their items. Sometimes in the busy hustle of everyday life we don't take the time to seek our the beauty that is all around us...but on a stay vacation what a great opportunity to explore and discover what we normally don't have time for.

This year may be the time for artists and craft producers to find a local venue, a kiosk or a table in the local mall, or a display on the walls of a local restaurant. Look at all the alternatives that are available and chose the one or two that will showcase your work to the local tourist.

Make sure you get a listing of names for your newsletter...always a great way to stay in touch. Always ask permission before placing an individual on your mailing list. In some areas it is illegal to send unsolicited mail or emails to an individual.
